Geoffrey Rice, retired Professor of History from the University of Canterbury, examines the historic chimneys of Christchurch which fell in the 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquakes. Rice was motivated to place the chimneys of Christchurch in their historical context following the 4 September 2010 earthquake because of the shared experience of many Christchurch residents who had their chimney fall down because of the seismic event. Extensive amendments to this book had to be made as many chimneys recorded as having survived the 4 September 2010 earthquake collapsed during the 22 February 2011 earthquake. The earthquakes have led to a rapid alteration in chimneys in Christchurch with many light weight alternatives being designed.
