Geologists continue to study the 4 September 2010 earthquake and consider it is likely to have been a complex event with several faults rupturing simultaneously. This model provides one interpretation of the enormous amounts of data collected by scientists following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake and shows one possible sequence of events. Beginning with the initial rupture of the Charing Cross fault the shaking lasted for 3-6 seconds, which was quickly followed by the rupture of the Greendale fault where the shaking lasted for about 10 seconds and 17 seconds later the fault near Hororata ruptured. The data this model is based upon suggests that additional sources were involved in this earthquake and so represents a simplified overview of a complicated phenomenon.
