High voltage power cables in Christchurch are located underground, meaning that the areas which experienced the most underground movement during the earthquakes were those worst affected by power outages. As a temporary measure 66,000 overhead cables had to be erected in badly damaged areas such as Dallington and New Brighton, where the underground substations were badly damaged. 11,000 new underground cables, like this example, were laid to connect a new substation at Keyes Road with the pre-earthquake network to ensure that the badly damaged eastern suburbs had access to power. Some households were without power for several weeks following the 22 February 2011 earthquake and it has been estimated by Orion, the primary power supplier to the Canterbury region, to take until 2019 for the power network to be returned to its pre-earthquake resilience.
