Researcher comments/remarks
Mainstream media coverage of the 22 February 2011 earthquake understandably focussed on the devastating damage and loss of life caused by the earthquake. This book takes a different angle, as it tells twenty-three harrowing personal experiences of being trapped and surviving. These stories include some people who were trapped inside the Pyne Gould Corporation (PGC), Canterbury Television (CTV) and The Press buildings, which have all been demolished since the earthquake. Many of these stories pay homage to the selfless actions of the largely untrained first responders as well as the emergency response teams who rescued the survivors, sometimes many hours after being trapped, and demonstrates how these people’s lives have been affected by the earthquake. A portion of the royalties from this book were donated to the Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch.
