Researcher comments/remarks
Carol McKeever wrote this children’s book after the 22 February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch to help children cope with the traumatic experience of an earthquake. ‘The Butterfly and the Earthquake’ tells a fictional story about a young boy called Tom and his family who support each other after an earthquake occurs. It is designed to be read to children by a sympathetic adult to help children discuss any fears they have and to help them ask for support. ‘The Butterfly and the Earthquake’ can be contrasted to the book ‘Quaky Cat’ written after the 4 September 2010 earthquake. The two books demonstrate the difference in emotion and experience associated with the two major quakes. McKeever and First Edition Publishers donated a copy of this book to all primary schools in Christchurch. All proceeds from the book were donated to Save the Children New Zealand.
