Provenance details

Following the 22 February 2011 earthquake the entire Arts Centre complex was closed, including the Dux. A campaign was mounted to repair and re-open it, but was unsuccessful and the business was re-opened in Addington. Various items of sadness and also support were attached to the security fence around the restaurant. Permission was given by the owner of the Dux for the Museum to collect some of the objects from the fence.

The Dux de Lux, on the corner of Hereford and Montreal Streets, was a popular local bar and restaurant that was renowned as a live music venue. This yellow duck was tied to the security fence surrounding the Dux following its closure, perhaps as a sign of solidarity. The Dux de Lux building, located in the grounds of the Christchurch Arts Centre, was registered as a Category 2 historic building by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust in 1981. Originally the University of Canterbury's Student Union, the building was significantly damaged during the 22 February 2011 earthquake which forced the closure of the business. The Dux has since re-opened as a music venue in the Christchurch suburb of Addington and a restaurant in Riccarton.
