Researcher comments/remarks
Following the 22 February 2011 earthquake a limited number of travel permits were issued to allow vehicle access to Lyttelton and the central city. This permit was issued to Sasha Stollman and, when displayed on a vehicle's windshield, permitted travel through the Lyttelton Tunnel. Initially closed to all traffic after the earthquake, the tunnel was opened to emergency vehicles and then residents with permits when it was assessed as structurally safe. The permit has been stamped ‘Commanding Officer HMNZS CANTERBURY 26 Feb 2011’. The HMNZS CANTERBURY was in port in Lyttelton when the earthquake occurred and provided residents with immediate assistance following the earthquake. These permits are a tangible reminder of the disruption to travel following the earthquake.
