Researcher comments/remarks
The severe damage to Christchurch’s central city caused by the 22 February 2011 earthquake is uniquely shown in this book. The images were taken by New Zealand Police Forensic Photographers who worked within the central business district red zone when it was cordoned off from public access. The work of emergency response teams from around the world, such as the Police, Fire Service, St John Ambulance and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), were recorded in these images. The photographs by Forensic Photographers were used to create an archive for the Disaster Victim Identification Process, yet they also represent the only publically available visual record of the red-zone at this time. The compilation of these images into a book pays tribute to those involved in the emergency response operation, creating a clear and compassionate remembrance of their efforts, as well as showcasing the damage in the central city. Royalties from the book were donated to the Family Help Trust.
