Rebecca Lovell-Smith owned and operated the vintage shop ‘God Save the Queen’ in Lyttelton. She lost both her home and the shop as a result of damage sustained during the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010-2011. This loss motivated her to design this tea towel which features the poem ‘Stronger City’ written by American poet Gertrude Ryder Bennett in 1931. The poem speaks of how rebuilding a stronger city can be an antidote to the despair in the human spirit caused by experiencing the earthquakes. The poem also features on a plaque in Napier in recognition of the Hawkes Bay earthquake in 1931.
