Object Detail

Provenance details
Owned and used by John Neil (Neil) Hamilton, New Zealand (Canterbury) mountaineer who went to Antarctica with the United States Antarctic Program in the 1960s as a field support and guide for early scientific work in the Dry Valley's area. Hamilton also owned Snowline Sports, St Asaph Street, Christchurch and was a life member of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and New Zealand Alpine Club. Hamilton was considered quite eccentric by fellow mountaineers and had a significant impact on Canterbury and New Zealand mountaineering over several decades. He was invited to work in Antarctica because of his mountaineering/outdoor survival skills.
