Researcher comments/remarks
It is estimated that 1,750 spades similar to this one were used in the cleanup of Christchurch after both the 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquakes. Many of the tools and wheelbarrows required for the large scale operation were borrowed from friends or neighbours, donated by local businesses or supplied by rental equipment specialists, like Hire Pool. Shovelling liquefaction was only one of the jobs carried out by Student Volunteer Army (SVA) volunteers, though it has proven one of the most memorable. Residents who looked out over their properties were overwhelmed by the prospect of cleaning up the dense sandy mess, in some areas up to 70cm deep, only to be relieved of this burden by volunteers making light work of the situation through sheer numbers and co-operation.
