Description
One black plastic barrelled wheelbarrow with a blue metal frame, black rubber handles and a pneumatic tyre; manufacturer's name in white on long sides and torn promotional label on short side near handles. Barrel is well used and contains remnants of liquefaction. Used by Student Volunteer Army in the clean up after 4 September 2010 earthquake.

It is estimated that 900 wheelbarrows similar to this one were used by the Student Volunteer Army (SVA) and the farming community volunteers nicknamed the “Farmy Army”. These groups cleared over 425,000 tonnes of liquefaction in the cleanup of the 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011 earthquake. Many of these wheelbarrows were borrowed from the wider Christchurch community who had been contacted by a group from the SVA, the same group later ensured the return of the wheelbarrows to their owners, demonstrating the logistical challenges the SVA organisers faced. These wheelbarrows were the primary means of removing liquefaction from residential properties and became an iconic object of the cleanup project. Each wheelbarrow had to be filled by people with spades as heavy machinery would cause more damage to people’s property.
