Researcher comments/remarks
Christchurch's artisan Three Boys Brewery sustained only minor damage during the 4 September 2010 earthquake and was able to resume business within days. The brewery was in the process of brewing its first batch of Golden Ale since the earthquake when an aftershock caused a power cut, interrupting the brewing process at a crucial time. After some improvisation to finish the process this particular batch of beer was named ‘Aftershock’ in commemoration of the ongoing aftershocks occurring in Canterbury. The 7.1% alcohol content reflects the magnitude of the earthquake. The bottled beer was adorned on the cap with a piece of smashed brick. This bottle is one of twelve in Canterbury Museum’s earthquake collections.
