Originally the site of the University of Canterbury and Christchurch Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools, this collection of buildings, dating from between 1877 and 1966, were designed primarily by Benjamin Mountford and constructed in the Gothic Revival style. The home of the Christchurch Arts Centre since the 1970s the site was badly damaged by the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes and was closed for a significant period of time for remediation and seismic strengthening.
