One of a pair owned by runholder Edward Chapman of Acton and (later) Drayton, mid -Canterbury; both were exhibited in 1950 at Canterbury Museum for the Canterbury Colonists Centennial Exhibition.

Family history states that this table and its pair were brought to Canterbury in 1856 on the Egmont by "Edward Palmer Chapman." However this cannot be correct - Edward Palmer Chapman was born in 1857. It is more likely that it was bought by his parents Edward and Emmelina Chapman on their honeymoon trip to England in late 1853, returning to Canterbury in February 1854, having sailed to Wellington in the "Prima Donna." The tables were inherited by (1) Maurice Palmer Chapman (grandson of Edward Chapman, son of William Palmer Chapman [the eldest son of Edward and Emmelina], cousin of George Palmer Chapman), and (2 = this table) by George Palmer Chapman, grandson of Edward Chapman, son of Edward Palmer Chapman [the second son of Edward and Emmelina], cousin of Maurice Palmer Chapman. George Palmer Chapman (named after his grandfather's cousin) was the donor's father.
