This is at Ripapa Island, Lyttelton Harbour. Sir William Jervois was a military engineer who in 1877 was asked to survey and make recommendations on the location of harbour defences in Australia and New Zealand. He was Governor first in the Straits Settlements in Malaya, then South Australia and finally became Governor in New Zealand from 1882 - 1889. His name like so many English name was not pronounced as it is spelt. It was pronounced 'Jarvis'
