Researcher comments/remarks
The then Christchurch Tourist Information Centre, originally the Municipal Chambers, on the corner of Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Terrace is featured in this photograph, circa 1995, with a horse and cart and The Wizard (Ian Brackenbury Channell) in the foreground. The Wizard arrived in Christchurch in 1974 and was recognised as the official wizard of New Zealand by Prime Minister Mike Moore in 1990. He is a renowned personality in the city and aims to revitalise people’s interest in their environment and community. The Wizard was actively involved in the campaign to save ChristChurch Cathedral from demolition.
