Researcher comments/remarks
Christchurch's tram system first opened in 1880 and linked Cathedral Square to the railway station. The tramway's heyday was in the 1920s when network was the largest in the country, but by the end of the Second World War the lines and infrastructure were beginning the wear out. The tramway closed in 1954. In 1995 trams began to run as a tourist attraction in central Christchurch using original restored vehicles. This popular activity had to stop running following the 22 February 2011 earthquakes, but was set to reopen in late 2013.
