This photograph depicts Montreal Street from the Hereford Street corner where the Christchurch Central Police Station was located. The Christchurch Central Police Station occupied this location since 1873, though the old buildings were demolished in 1968 to allow space for the new high rise to be built. The new building was completed in 1973. It survived the Christchurch earthquakes. The graffiti in the photograph written on the fence surrounding the police station yard reads ‘Baa [sic] live sheep exports’.
