Researcher comments/remarks
This photograph taken of Cashel Street in 1985 shows the businesses Mrs Pope’s, The Shades Arcade, and Whitcoulls. Mrs Pope’s occupied these premises in 1915, in addition to the original business in Victoria Square. Located next door at 111 Cashel Street was Whitcoulls, which occupied this building in 1906. The Whitcoulls building had seismic strengthening completed in 2005, despite this the building was demolished because of damage following the 22 February 2011 earthquake. The only building in this photograph not to be demolished following the 2010 - 2011 earthquake is The Shades Arcade, located at 99-101 Cashel Street.
