Sledge: Dog

Description
Large dismantleable cargo sledge with metal bands on runners Trans Antarctic Expedition 1958.
12 pieces of wood (short planks and rods) are included.

"Bernie Gunn ex T.A.E. phoned me with details. Sledge is based on type used in Greenland on sea ice. This was used during T.A.E. by Mr Gunn and R.F. Brooke and was pulled by 9 dogs. In spring of 1957 it was after covering the sea ice taken up the Blue Glacier to below Mt. Lister. Runners were good on sea ice - a mixture of porridge and water frozen to the runners cut down on friction. For use in soft snow they attached old skis to the runners." July 7, 1978, see p273, Antarctic Catalogue vol.1.
