Researcher comments/remarks
Until 1904 service in polar regions was recognised by the award of the Arctic Medal. With the completion of the National Antarctic Expedition under the leadership of Commander Robert Falcon Scott, 1901-1904, a need was felt for a medal which acknowledged the Antarctic. A new medal was struck, to be known as the Polar Medal, which was to cover both regions. The first award of this medal was to Commander (Later Captain) Robert Falcon Scott of the Royal Navy and this medal is on displayed at Canterbury Museum. Of the complement of the expedition ship Discovery, 37 received the silver medal, 5 the bronze and 5 received no recognition.
