Provenance details
In 1970, Ivan Mauger went on a celebratory exhibition tour of the United States having just won the the 1968 and 1969 World Champs. While he was there, the Director of Orange County Metals vowed to gold-plate Mauger’s bike if he won the 1970 World Championships. Mauger was successful in 1970, achieving a hat-trick of wins. The winning bike was taken to California to be gold plated. It took 18 months and cost US$500 000 to gold-plate the bike inside and out. Ray Bokelman did the gold-plating while George Wenn rebuilt the bike. All but the fly-wheels, connecting rod, piston, valves, rocker arms and bearings were gold-plated. Only the tyres, fuel lines and rear mudguard have been replaced since the race in 1970.: Ivan Mauger: California/United States of America/North America: 1970
