The Oxford Hotel and the Ramada Inn on Colombo Street in central Christchurch are depicted in this photograph from 1985. The Ramada Inn on Victoria Square was constructed at 776 Colombo Street in 1974 as part of the next generation of tall buildings for inner city hotels. It was built on the site of the old Federal Hotel and is now the Copthorne Central. The original Oxford Hotel building from 1881 was extensively remodelled in 1978, when the hotel became known as the Oxford Tavern. Later the tavern became the Oxford on Avon, which housed two bars and two restaurants. The building did not survive the 2010-2011 earthquakes and had to be demolished.
