The early paintings of Wales sugges that he and probably his family stayed at Crickhowell when he was 18.He climbed the Darren to paint the Sugarloaf, painted the Beacons from Llangorse lake, visited Glanusk Park, and along with many other artists painted Portmawr Gateway including the actual iron gate. Was he alone or with his parents? He also visited Brecon, where he records the castle, and Raglan Castle as well as travelling down to the coast probably taking a boat from Penarth Pier to Steep Holm. He must have valued these early paintings as he takes these early sketchbook with him to New Zealand.
