Associated notes
As its name suggests ("Christchurch Brick Company"), this firm mainly concentrated on the production of bricks and pipes. Unfortunately not a lot is known about their domestic goods, although they produced some of the most competently potted and glazed of any early New Zealand wares.

George and Thomas Horsley set up the business, after they bought the Fernley brickworks from Henry Kirk in 1898. The firm went under the name of T. N. Horsley & Co. until 1905, when they also acquired the Wigram Brothers brickworks at Hillsborough, and from that point the business went under the name of the Christchurch Brick company. In 1910 the Horsleys bought the Milton Pottery (Central Otago), and it is quite possible that wares such as yours were in fact made at Milton, by a very competent potter named Jimmy Johnstone, who later worked for both Luke Adams and the Timaru Potteries. The Milton pottery was uneconomic and was closed in 1915. Production at the Hillsborough factory stopped in 1920, but the firm continued in operation until 1924 at another site in Christchurch.
