Description
A wooden trinket or letter box incorporating a top panel of oak. Inscribed in ink on the underside of box; 'this piece of oak in the top of this box is from the broken rudder of the Antarctic Ship Discovery, which was broken when being freed from the ice by the "morning" and "Terra Nova" at the South Pole February 1904. The piece of oak was given by Capt Scott of the "Discovery" to Mr J.J. Kinsey and by Mr J.J. Kinsey to J.H. Fisher. With love to Gladys from her father on her 15th birthday August 30th 1904 JHF "Miowera" Lower Riccarton Chch N.Z.'

Surveying instrument made by Cary, Porter, Ltd., and used on the Discovery expedition to Antarctica. Specifically used in the 1902 season by Armitage on the first ascent of the Ferrar Glacier ( later named the Upper Taylor Glacier), as well as in the 1903 season by Lt Mulock on Barnes' second journey to the South West on which they were the true discoverers of the Byrd Glacier and sighted the inland ice, Mulock recording an angle of one thirtieth of a degree elevation from the horizontal.: Lieutenant George Mulock: Discovery Point/Antarctica: 1903
