Researcher comments/remarks
The Excelsior Hotel, located at 120 Manchester Street on corner of High Street in central Christchurch, is depicted in this photograph. Registered as a category one heritage building it was designed by William Armson in the Italian Palazzo style. The building was opened in 1881 though the site had been utilised as a hotel since 1865. The hotel, which was named the Excelsior in 1908, was severely damaged by the 2010-2011 Canterbury Earthquakes. though Plans were made to rebuild the hotel in the same heritage style at the same location.
