Ceramic: vessel

Description
One glazed green-grey earthenware vessel. Globular body tapers towards a flat base and extends into a long neck flaring slightly at the top. Series of incised transverse lines around neck shoulder and waist. Shoulder patterns link two animal heads moulded in shallow relief on opposing sides of vessel. Animal heads feature prominent nose rings.

Provenance details
From Han grave, deserted city of Hei Shui Kuo. This once populous centre of Black Water Kingdom, being on early silk route into China and with walls five miles in diameter, now merely ruins under sand.
Received in 1954 from the Hong Kong University Museum and Art Gallery, by exchange.
