Dictionary of Decorative Arts records "Zwiebelmuster onion pattern, a type of porcelain decoration derived from a Chinese design of formalised leaves, flowers and peaches which were mistaken for onions by Europeans and used at the Meissen factory in cheaper tablewares from 1739 (introduced by J. G. Herold in 1735) and much copied by other factories.
