Wheelbarrow Handle

Description
One wheelbarrow handle, broken and mounted on a display stand. The handle is rectangular at the broken end but tapers into a rounded terminus. Mounted on a wooden plinth. A plaque attached to the mount has an inscription beginning "This wheelbarrow handle is all that remains from a wheelbarrow and a shovel that was dramatically run over on 25 February 1937..."

The wheelbarrow was "dramatically run over" on 25 February 1937 by a Caterpillar RD-8 driven by the Hon. Robert Semple MP, Minister of Public Works, at the opening of Harewood Aerodrome (later Christchuch Airport). The incident was said to have symbolised the end of manual construction methods and the beginning of mechanisation.

Plaque reads "This wheelbarrow handle is all that remains from a wheelbarrow and shovel that was dramatically run over on 25 February 1937 by a Caterpillar RD-8 with drawn scraper driven by the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works. This incident occured at the opening of the Harewood Airport, Christchurch symbolising the end of old methods and beginning a new era of earthmoving in New Zealand."
