Haji Mohemmed Daoud Nabi was the first victim of the 15 March 2019 terrorist attacks in Christchurch. He greeted the gunman at the door of the Al Noor Mosque with the words "Hello brother" before he was shot. Before that though, Nabi had been an important member of the Muslim community in Christchurch and New Zealand more broadly. He was the first Afghan immigrant to New Zealand, arriving during the 1970s and setting up a small farm on Marshland's Road before founding New Zealand's first halal abbatoir. Nabi was influential in setting up Christchurch's first Islamic Centre in Phillipstown in 1980 and also in the foundation of the Al Noor Mosque, which opened in 1984. Later, he worked to settle Afghan refugees in New Zealand and advised Prime Minister Helen Clark before her 2003 visit to Afghanistan.
