Researcher comments/remarks
In times of national mourning or crisis, New Zealanders often turn to Māori cultural symbols for expressions of solidarity, sadness and other emotions. Following the 2010-11 Canterbury earthquakes, the phrase kia kaha (stay strong) became widely used and this happened again after 15 March 2019.
