Description
Earthenware circular box with lid; Greek motif transfer decoration. Imitation "Etruscan" ware.
Lid: Convex; max.diam. 90mm; gilt rim; white glaze interior; matt black glaze exterior with white Greek transfer motif of Charioteer with 4 horses - front view.
Box: white glazed interior and base; matt black glaze exterior; Greek fret and cross border at rim with gilt edging.
Backstamp:on glaze and partly worn off; [unidentified] soldier wearing short tunic [head missing, but would have a Phyrygian cap], carrying a spear and shield; Pratts Greek England. [See NOTE for C1993.68]. Also transfer, very worn, probably for retailer: Sob...[illegible] Ch....[illegible].
